Sunken Japanese submarines discovered in Hawaii

On March 17, 2005, the largest known submarine of that time was discovered in the waters of Oahu. It was the I-401. It was so large (five stories high and 400 ft. in length), it was capable of carring three "folding wing planes." The technology was considered to be 20 years ahead of its time. The plan, this site says, was for the sub to get close enough and launch the planes to bomb the Panama Canal, but because the war had ended, this plan was never carried out.

The sub was captured by the US and sunk for fear of falling into the hands of our then cold war foe, the Soviet Union (funny how war works).

On the same site, http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/HURL/midget.html is the record on how, on August 28, 2002, the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) also found a midget Japanese submarine that had been sunk on December 7, 1941, only a few hours before the plane invasion. It had been sunk by the USS Ward. Read this facinating story of how the sub was found.
