Important to the war effort, but still not equal
World War II was, perhaps, the turning point for African Americans to start getting respect. Much of that was, in part, due to Elenor Roosevelt, the President's wife.
Unfortunately, there are activists and agitators, who claim that African Americans only served in insignificant roles during the war. I disagree. Although the military was not desegregated until the Truman administrtion, African Americans played a vital role.
One cannot win a war without supplies. Had it not been for the Quartermaster Corps to supply the front line troops, there would not have been victory.
